On August 13, 2010 Malcolm X Grassroots Movement's (MXGM) Black August Hip-Hop Project will produce its 13th Annual Benefit Concert at Highline Ballroom in New York City.
The 2010 Black August Hip Hop Benefit Concert continues a long tradition as the only hip-hop show of its caliber for the benefit and awareness of U.S. political prisoners. This year's concert goers will be endowed with live performances by Pharoahe Monch, dead prez, Sadat X, Cody Chestnutt, Hasan Salaam, Homeboy Sandman, and special surprise guests. The show will begin promptly at 9pm and tickets are currently available for $15 in advance and $20 at the door, all of which will be donated.
The New York Black August Hip-Hop Project has established a national reputation with its strong legacy of consistently selling out Nokia Theatre, BB Kings, Bowery Ballroom, and other premiere New York venues with star studded lineups that have included artists such as Common, David Banner, Erykah Badu, Gil Scott Herron, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and The Roots.
The annual event has become a highly anticipated staple on the Tri-State area hip-hop enthusiasts and activists alike. For over a decade it has remained the only annual show of its size and kind to provide hip-hop artists an opportunity to tangibly support grassroots activists in their fight for social justice and human rights.
The Black August Hip Hop Project was created by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement to promote human rights and raise awareness about U.S. political prisoners unjustly incarcerated for their actions as activists and community organizers. "The U.S. has nearly one hundred political prisoners most of whom are rarely talked about," says MXGM member Lalit Clarkson, "The Black August Concert provides a way for us to spread awareness to a multitude of people using the powerful tool of hip-hop for a positive cause." In addition to the NYC concerts organizers have also facilitated international exchanges and festivals in Cuba, South Africa, Tanzania, Brazil, and Venezuela.
The 2010 Black August Concert in the spirit of predecessor shows, promises to be an unforgettable evening of memorable performances and special surprise guests. Tickets can be purchased at the Highline Ballroom Box Office located at 431 W. 16th St New York, NY or online at www.ticketweb.com.
