Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth - Live in Sweden

Imagine turning back time 15 years, back to what I call the Golden Days of Hip Hop. Back to joyful boom bap beats with positive rhymes and that true happy hip hop spirit.

This is exactly what happened to me and 700 other Swedish heads on November 12 when Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth entered the stage at Kägelbanan in Stockholm Sweden.  This legendary hip hop duo, who have spent years apart, finally got together again for a final tour, The Reunion.

The hype about their tour has been going on for several weeks and the enormous anticipation from people all around Sweden had been hard to miss.
Even though I'm a huge fan, I have to say I was ready to criticize, after seeing Pete Rock doing a dj session a couple of months back which was a big disappointment.  But this time our heros from the past really killed it.

It felt natural, they had fun on stage and you could really feel the positive vibe spreading all over the place. All I could see around me were smiling faces jumping up and down with hands in the air, singing along to classics like I'll Take You There, Searching and I Got A Love.

The duo made a solid and surprisingly hot performance with great crowd control. In between songs you would hear P.R. hyping the audience with words like, "Go C.L.!  Go P.R.!  Go and make money money!  Make money money money!"

We already know Pete Rock did a fantastic job with his beat production many years ago, and last week it was up to C.L. to make the show complete.  With his smooth voice, relaxed flow and confidence, it was almost like hearing it through a digital recording.  Like Guru once said - "It's mostly the voice that gets you up..."  Out of all shows I've been to C.L.'s mic control, clear crisp voice and his convincing stage performance made this show one of the best.

Regarding the tracks, the legends left no one disappointed. Classics from Mecca And The Soul Brother and The Main Ingredient moved the crowd with sometimes long and funny dialogs where they almost made us believe that the beef was still going on, but only seconds later, they would jump off into another classic like "Straighten It Out".

Half way through the gig, a guy in the audience standing next to me started humming to the jazzy introlude to T.R.O.Y and soon it was picked up by everyone in the house. Definitely a cool moment. You could tell on P.R. and C.L.'s faces that it made them happy, but of course C.L. had to play it cool and interrupt the loud humming and say something like "Are you turning my shit into karaoke already?"

Another great moment in the show was an unexpected tribute to Run-DMC where Pete Rock did cutbacks of Sucker MC's, Run's House & Down With The King.

After teasing the people by holding back on everyone's favorite (TROY) Pete finally left the turntables and got on the mic for the grand finale, a moment we all had been waiting for - Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, together on stage, lifting the house by performing They Reminisce Over You.
