Happy Birthday salute to the legendary DJ Quik

Happy Birthday salute to the legendary DJ Quik

This day in hip-hop celebrates the birth of critically-acclaimed (and lightning-fast in terms of record consistency) rapper/producer, none other than DJ Quik.

Born on January 18th 1970 in Compton, California, a younger David Marvin Blake found himself easily exposed to numerous funk and soul artists, such as a particular Roger Troutman, whose mentorship of the talkbox transitioned into an iconic feat evident in majority of Quik's sounds throughout his career. To top that off, Blake had already taken up to learning several instruments as early as twelve years of age.

Donning the apt stage name, DJ Quik, for his stealthy and speedy production rate, Blake had already garnered platinum-selling notoriety by age twenty-one. That being said, however, Quik's journey traces from his humble beginnings selling homemade mixtapes (such as his notable The Red Tape), playing at live shows all across Southern California, to his affiliation under Profile and Ruthless Records.

Along his remarkable discography of hit singles and records, many critics allude to his memorable debut album Quik Is The Name, which spawned two chart-topping singles “Tonite” and “Born and Raised in Compton”, not to mention garnering certified platinum by the RIAA.

In 1996, fans and critics alike saw Quik's reputation ignite to higher degrees upon releasing House of Music, a timeless record he produced for critically-acclaimed R&B/Soul group Tony! Toni! Tone! The album featured hits like the feel-good anthem, “Let's Get Down”, which surged the record to sell over one million copies nationwide.

Needless to say, DJ Quik represents among hip-hop's most decorated and brilliant artists, showcasing remarkable balance between versatile artistry and unquenched consistency.
