Hip hop's first solo female rapper, MC Lyte. In addition to being a critically beloved MC and DJ, Lyte is also a well know activist, celebrated for promoting empowerment in the African-American community, especially among young girls. Lyte's contributions to hip hop history were so great that The Smithsonian included her albums as well as her turntables in their exhibit on hip hop.
